Dragao das Figueiras

The offspring of Dragão das Figueiras have dominated the scene from the very beginning. His son Nobre Saramunheiro, for example, won the four-year-old class at the 32nd edition of the Lusitano Festival at the Manuel Possolo Hippodrome/POR. Under his rider Nuno Chaves de Almeida, he received 84.800 percent. This also secured him the valuable award of the Lusitano Breeders' Association APSL for the highest graded Lusitano. Earlier, Nobre Saramunheiro had already won the Portugal Cup with results of over 77 percent, with his walk receiving a dream score of 10. The Dragão das Figueiras daughter Odalisca received a gold medal. Other Dragão das Figueiras offspring are off to extremely promising starts in the sport.

Dragão das Figueiras is considered one of the most successful Lusitanos in the world. And he was the first representative of his breed to be approved for warmblood breeding. Under Sascha Schulz, the majestic gray won the World Cup qualifier in Mariakalnok/HUN, won the Grand Prix Freestyle at the CDI4* in Leudelange/LUX, finished second in the World Cup qualifier in Brno/CZE and in the Grand Prix Freestyle at the CHIO Aachen and was third in the Grand Prix at the CDI4* in Munich. The pair also successfully participated in the European Championships in Rotterdam/NED.

His congenial and always ready to perform interior, the power in his back and his enormous willingness to collect make Dragão das Figueiras a much sought-after stallion by Lusitano and warmblood breeders alike.

Presented with great success by Jose Antonia Garcia Mena/ESP, first in international young horse competitions and later in the Small Tour, Dragão das Figueiras made his Grand Prix debut in March 2017 as a nine-year-old with Severo Jesus Jurado Lopez/ESP. Under Sascha Schulz, in addition to winning the Luxembourg Championship, he subsequently placed in Mannheim, Achleiten/AUT, Pompadour/FRA, Cappeln, Le Mans/FRA, Munich, Geneva/SUI and, as the highlight of the season, third place in the Grand Prix and fourth place in the freestyle at the CDI5* in Madrid/ESP. Dragão das Figueiras thus advanced to become by far the most successful Lusitano in his age group.

A look at the pedigree reveals a valuable inbreeding component to the sire hero Xaquiro. Already as a young stallion he was awarded many prizes and passed his licensing with a top score of 80 points. Thanks to his successful offspring, including the licensed sons Rouxinol, Oxidado, Toxico, Quixote and Spartacus, the Olympic participant Oxalis da Meia Lua/Miguel Ralão Duarte/POR and the dam of the Olympic Freestyle 16th Rubi/Gonçalo Carvalho/POR, he achieved the highest breeding value of over 95 percent. He was the only stallion to receive the APSL title "Recommended Stallion with Six Stars". In 1988 he won gold at the International Lusitano Festival (FIPSL) in the stallion category and in 2004 in the stallion offspring category. In 2010 Xaquiro was awarded the title of "Outstanding Sire".

The dam, Valeria, is sister to the stallion Xacal, who was APSL Champion of Three-Year-Olds in 2006 and placed in the front of the four-horse field under Werner Ulrich/SUI and António Simones/POR, respectively, at World Championships and in the World Cup.

Both Dragão das Figueira's sire Unico and his dam Valeria are third-generation descendants of the mare Sevilha by Firme. Unico, who was unable to compete due to an early injury but has sired a number of successful offspring, is a half-brother to Batuta (by Quixote)/Gonçalo Carvalho/POR, who took part in the European Championships and placed in the World Cup, and to Altiva/António Simoes/POR, who placed in the World Driving Championships.
